GASLAMP QUARTER. This stylish bar offers outstanding views of the San Diego skyline. POINT LOMA. Named for famed Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo, who in 1542 landed in San Diego Bay, this complex includes a museum that accurately depicts Cabrillo's exploits and those of other early explorers. Also on-site is Point Loma Lighthouse, towering 433 feet above the ocean. Arguably the best location in San Diego for spectacular views of the Bay and of the city's skyline.

LA JOLLA. Situated just above La Jolla Cove, this park is a favorite of weekend picnickers. It also invites strolls along the waterfront sidewalk and games of shuffleboard. Most of the surrounding area is a wildlife preserve, so it offers excellent swimming, diving and tidepooling. You may want to bring binoculars since sea otters and sea lions frequent the vicinity. A lifeguard station is staffed year-round, and although on-street parking can be tough, a number of public garages are within walking distance.

CORONADO. Located on Coronado, this stylish shopping destination welcomes guests from the ferry with an outstanding view of the city's skyline and a host of specialty and souvenir shops. Restaurants and cafes also dot the area, amidst the lovely landscaping that includes ponds and palms. On Tuesdays, shoppers can peruse the weekly Farmers' Market.

LA JOLLA VILLAGE. A visit to this 1928 Mediterranean-style hotel, awash in pink stucco and adorned with a Spanish tiled roof, will leave you mesmerized. Common areas are tastefully decorated with wrought iron and mosaics, and guest rooms are opulent, with most affording spectacular ocean views. Three restaurants are located on site, including The Sky Room, which offers French cuisine in an intimate setting with a 180-degree view of the Pacific.
